Halesowen College lights the way to savings with Uni Smart Solutions’ smart lighting

Halesowen College is set to save nearly £36,000 a year and make a major leap toward its sustainability targets thanks to a pioneering new smart lighting solution supplied by Uni Smart Solutions.

Faced with rising energy costs and a net zero challenge, the West Midlands further education provider turned to innovative technology to tackle its lighting inefficiencies. With support from the Black Country Chamber of Commerce, the college was introduced to local technology specialists by Your Digital Hub, who recommended Uni Smart’s EcoPulse Smart Lighting platform to replace and upgrade their lighting across its Whittingham Road campus.

How did Uni Smart help Halesowen College?

The comprehensive upgrade, delivered as part of Uni Smart’s Smart Building Managed Service offering, saw 1,250 smart LED lights installed in three blocks of the campus along with 380 self-testing emergency lights. These systems intelligently adapt lighting based on real-time use, cutting waste and maximising efficiency.

Uni Smart conducted a site audit, installed the IoT-driven network and now provides ongoing management and optimisation — with early data already showing an 83 % reduction in energy usage compared to the previous setup.

Under the new arrangement, the college is expected to achieve monthly net savings of £2,000 to £3,000, which will cover the solution under a flexible payment model that avoids large upfront capital expenditure. The more blocks upgraded with the new intelligent lighting system the greater the savings for the College going forward.

Save money and become sustainable

Beyond the financial gains, the intelligent lighting system forms part of the college’s broader sustainability agenda and enhances learning environments for students and staff alike. Uni Smart Solutions’ suite of IoT-based technologies provides data insights and automation that help organisations reduce energy consumption and operational costs — all while supporting net zero goals.

As the college prepares to extend its environmental initiatives across additional parts of its estate, the success of this smart lighting project highlights the practical impact of digital transformation and energy optimisation in education.
