Smart metering uses connected digital meters and analytics platforms to monitor utilities such as electricity, gas, and water in real time. Unlike traditional meters, which only provide historical billing data, smart systems deliver live insights into how a building is performing minute by minute.

This allows businesses to move from reactive energy management to proactive optimisation.

At Uni Smart Solutions, smart metering forms part of a wider intelligent building strategy through its EcoPulse Smart Metering platform, helping organisations improve efficiency, reduce waste, and gain better operational visibility.

Following a detailed analysis of energy consumption across the estate, Uni Smart Solutions identified smart lighting controls as a high-impact intervention. The system ensures that lighting is only used when and where it is needed, combining automated controls with energy-efficient fittings.

The results have been substantial:

• Approximately 20% savings in overall operational costs

A key message from the event was the need for an energy system capable of managing growing and shifting gaps between energy supply and demand. Industry experts emphasised that the next phase of the energy transition will not be driven solely by new energy generation, but also by improving how energy is used within buildings.

As electricity demand continues to rise, organisations will require greater visibility of how energy is consumed across their estates. Real-time data, operational insight and smarter energy management were highlighted as critical tools to help reduce waste, improve efficiency and support more informed investment decisions.

Faced with rising energy costs and ambitious environmental goals, Halesowen College embarked on a strategic initiative to overhaul its building systems, beginning with lighting and energy monitoring. The college partnered with Uni Smart Solutions — a managed service provider for smart buildings — to deploy its EcoPulse intelligent technology suite, focusing initially on smart lighting controls that dramatically improve energy performance and data insight for facilities managers.

The comprehensive upgrade, delivered as part of Uni Smart’s Smart Building Managed Service offering, saw 1,250 smart LED lights installed in three blocks of the campus along with 380 self-testing emergency lights. These systems intelligently adapt lighting based on real-time use, cutting waste and maximising efficiency.

Uni Smart conducted a site audit, installed the IoT-driven network and now provides ongoing management and optimisation — with early data already showing an 83 % reduction in energy usage compared to the previous setup.

Under the new arrangement, the college is expected to achieve monthly net savings of £2,000 to £3,000, which will cover the solution under a flexible payment model that avoids large upfront capital expenditure. The more blocks upgraded with the new intelligent lighting system the greater the savings for the College going forward.
